Working out the rudiments!

I love working through old snare drum studies, in particular the Charles Wilcoxon snare solos with my more advanced pupils. They are such a great way of getting the rudiments to flow together and starting to make sense of how useful they can be. Too many drummers only practice rudiments in isolation, rather than blending them together. The Wilcoxon solos are a great way to begin getting away from this mindset and discovering the endless possibilities the rudiments offer.

Here are links to a couple of books I love to work on myself and with pupils:

Here is a clip of a recent lesson where Iā€™m working through a couple of lines from a solo in the Modern Rudimental Swing Solos book with Nick, a second year jazz students at Leeds Conservatoire.
