Book Recommendation #1

Ok, so here is my first recommendation for books for drummers to check out, and it’s ‘The All-American Drummer by Charley Wilcoxon’.

The book itself is a collection of 150 short snare solos that utilise the original 26 standard American Rudiments. The book aims to ‘enable the modern Drummer to understand more clearly the far reaching possibilities of the Twenty-six Rudiments’. Even though the book was first published in 1945, and the term ‘modern Drummer’ was referring to drummers of that era, in my opinion it’s just as relevant today.

The solos themselves are nice and bitesize, and I tend to spend around 30 mins working though one in my morning pad routine. Most of the solos throw something at you that requires a bit of work, but on the whole they are pretty accessible and a good way at getting to grips with the rudimental drumming. They’ve really helped me to develop the ability to flow between rudiments, which helps with creativity when soloing

I’ll post a few clips through the week of different solos on my social media, so yo can get the idea. This first one is solo No. 40.
