Lockdown Book Recommendations

Ever since the start of lockdown, I’ve taken the chance to dedicate some time to work on my hands every day by spending an hour on the pad first thing when I get into the studio. I’ve been working through some great books and exercises, some of which I’ve done for years and others that are totally new discoveries. I’ve really noticed the progress as a result of some consistent practice like this, (which I usually don’t get a chance to do when I’m out and about gigging and each week looks different), so it has been refreshing to see the improvements.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to share some of the books and studies I’ve been working on, so drummers can check them out if they haven’t heard of any of them, as I think they all have some gold in them.

Each Monday, I tend to choose a new book off my shelf and focus on that for the full week. This helps keep my routine fresh and stops me from getting bored! I’ll share some clips too on my social media, so head there to see some of the things I’ve been shedding from the books, but whatever I have practiced, I will always end the hour with some rudimental improv to try to get the creativity flowing before I take a break/have a coffee/move on to the kit.

Keep an eye out next Monday for my first book recommendation.
